Eco/Green Lodging Standards for STR

About the Standards: The Sustainable Truckee Eco/Green Lodging Standards for Short Term Rentals (STR) were developed by Visit Truckee-Tahoe and included a six month period of input from homeowners and research at the state level and within the industry. Unique to Truckee, the standards recognize STR homeowners who are committed to making sustainable choices that support a thriving tourism economy, community well-being, and environmental protection.

How it Works: To be considered a Truckee Eco/Green lodging property, an STR must meet a minimum of three criteria in each section: Energy, Waste & Supplies, Water, and Transportation in addition to complying with required guest communications plus the Town of Truckee STR ordinance.

Self-Attestation: In each of the five categories below, STR owners, or property managers on behalf of owners, check each box as it applies to a unique home address. 

Home Inspection: While an on site inspection is not required to to receive your certification, Visit Truckee-Tahoe reserves the right to contact homeowners in order to conduct an audit at any time.

  • An Official Eco/Green Lodging Certificate & Window Cling  for display at your property.
  • A Sustainable Truckee Eco/Green Lodging gift bag which includes two Reusable Truckee Green Boxes to share with guests (first 50 qualified applicants), a Sustainable Truckee beanie + stickers, TART magnets, Dark Sky magnets + stickers, BCycle E-Bike rentals brochures, Sustainable Truckee Pre-Arrival Guide (digital).
  • Filter/Tag status as an Eco/Green STR on the Visit Truckee-Tahoe Booking Engine .
  • Licensing rights to print or digitally display Sustainable Truckee logo.
As an STR homeowner committed to sustainability, you'll also receive priority for Visit Truckee-Tahoe to showcase your property in special promotions and content development.

The Town of Truckee (local government) enacted an STR Ordinance that encourages respectful visitation that positively impacts our local economy while keeping our community safe. Let’s join together as an STR homeowner community by helping guests follow the rules and regulations. In turn, this helps strengthen a positive perception of the lodging industry and ensures the Truckee community values and appreciates the economic contribution of tourism.

Please note that at any time, VTT may elect to request a scheduled audit with a minimum of 72 hours notice to ensure compliance with Eco/Green Standards indicated and submitted on this application form.
