ドリーム・アフター・ドリーム (Dream after Dream)
Date and Venue: Ishmael Bernal Gallery | Feb 22 - March 2, 2024
Brief notes for the exhibit:
Filipino artist Karl Castro presents works
produced through research, fieldwork and material collection during his
three-month artist-in-residence program in Osaka, Japan. “Dream after Dream” is
an allegory for the recurrence of events or ambitions. In this exhibition,
Castro critically explores major global spectacles like expositions, and events
which mobilize dreams on a large scale. In particular, he focuses on the Philippine
Pavilion and the 1970 World Expo (EXPO ‘70), placing them in the broader
context of social realities in the Philippines and Japan. Through the lens and
practice of exhibition-making, he surfaces tensions, disjunctures, and
counter-narratives.
Castro’s work straddles different media, including painting, photo-media,
sculpture, and installation. He connects historical events and figures with his
own experiences and current society, encouraging different perspectives on the
future. –Shotaro Ikeda, curator
