This summer, a significant number of people in the St. John’s congregation named the work of healing the chronic illness of racism as a key priority in the life of our church. Of course it is not our only priority--but as followers of the Way of Jesus in Minnesota in 2020, we believe that the Church must take an unequivocal stand, grounded in scripture, prayer, and action, to combat an evil that has existed in our nation and in our state for far too long. Because racism is one of the primary evils of our time, so too must resisting it be one of the primary priorities of the church.
Many of our members participated in a series of conversations about racial justice, read books on the issue, talked with each other, and shared our hopes, fears, dreams, and concerns.
From these conversations, a small group of members and staff created a DRAFT proposal for how we will continue to elevate this work in our community.
Now we need feedback on this proposal. Throughout September we will be gathering feedback on this document, including through this form. Once adapted based on your feedback, and approved by the vestry, this document will serve as a guide for our work to dismantle racism over the next two years.
