Understanding the American Classroom
5:15 pm - 6:30 pm, Thursday, October 3rd. Presented by Jane Dunphy, MIT Global Studies and Languages. We will examine how cultural forces have shaped educational practices—ways of knowing, reasoning and communicating—in the USA and compare these attitudes and practices to those in your home countries. The MIT classroom will serve as a case study of US higher education.  A series of interactive exercises will provide insights into how to adapt to the MIT classroom environment.

5 pm - 6 pm, Wednesday, Oct 16th. Presented by the ISO. We will discuss culture shock and tips for adjustment, as well as explain aspects of American culture that may be confusing or surprising. Bring your questions and observations!

Hacking Sleep
5pm - 6 pm, Tuesday, October 29th. Presented by Zan Barry, Community Wellness. Learn how to get better quality sleep even when you can’t get quantity sleep. Identify simple lifestyle changes that can improve sleep and help you feel more rested. Learn ways to manage stress better and practice techniques that can help enhance your relaxation and sleep quality.

The Imposter Phenomenon
12noon  - 1 pm, Friday, November 15th. Presented by Maryam Khodadoust in Student Mental Health & Counseling. Do you make excuses about your successes? (“I’m just lucky, was at the right place at the right time, anyone could have done it.” etc). Do you remember every failure and review it like a crime scene--over and over again your head? Do you procrastinate on academic work that matters to you?  Have you held back from submitting a paper for publishing or conference or grant? You may be suffering from Imposter Phenomenon. Learn about this phenomenon and strategies to keep it from hijacking your academic experience.
