Turtle Road-Crossing Monitor
Thank you for your support in helping our oldest relatives, the turtles survive. It takes up to 60 years to replace just one of these keystone species. Your volunteering is an amazing help, and also raises awareness showcasing the value of these animals to the world. Monitoring sites are those where turtles are known to be "hit" on roads- they are high mortality sites. There are many places that this occurs, however these sites are a higher priority based on traffic and activity. If you know of any other sites that may benefit from this programming, please let us know (a section in the form is available for this information).
Once you have completed this form we will be in touch to organize training in safety protocols, data collection, and safe-turtle handling. Each volunteer will be provided with high viz vests, and each site will be marked with high viz signage. Thank you!
This initiative is being led by Turtle Guardians, a program of The Land Between charity, and in partnership with the Road Departments of Peterborough and Haliburton County. We are able to provide signage, safety equipment, temporary fencing and data apps with the support of private donations. Turtle Guardians/The Land Between is working towards implementing turtle tunnel fencing and other mitigating solutions across the region.
We will also be able to broker crossing monitors in other counties and on other roads as we build this program...please specify in the form if you have another site that needs attention.
