1.  Four Worlds (4W) is a conceptual framework that distinguishes aspects of society – political, economic, social, and cultural – as social science factors.  These factors of the human condition are the same across time and space. Using a 4W analysis, students become increasingly skilled at identifying and relating factors. Students engage in the “science of the social sciences” as they layer their understanding of cause and effect between factors.  ***Assertion: 4W is a highly effective analytical tool to achieve greater depth and scope, and to help build rigorous critical thinking skills. *

2.  History is complex, dense, and controversial. Social science factors establish clear criteria for clear expectations of what constitutes a proficient response to profound questions. To develop critical thinking, the 4W analytical tool blends structure and flexibility. 4W provides structure with a common frame of reference and differentiated factors. It acts as a “conceptual framework” that provides necessary CONTEXT but is open-ended to justify reasoning and evidence. ***Assertion: The 4W analytical tool greatly supports teacher effectiveness in their pivotal roles to prompt, guide and deepen students’ thinking. *
