DATAUP PROGRAM: Apply to Bring Data Science to Your Campus! Deadline: September 3, 2021

Overview
The South Big Data Innovation Hub is excited to host the 2021 DataUp Program as part of our Keeping Data Science Broad Series. DataUp will offer hands-on training for instructor teams at minority-serving institutions, community colleges, or 4-year liberal arts colleges. Priority will be given to hosts who can demonstrate the participation of faculty from diverse departments, or multiple institutions of the types listed above.

Recipients of DataUp will: (a) receive a one 2-day data science workshop hosted on their campus for 15 -30 people (workshop fees waived and instructor provided), (b) be required to a virtual instructor training workshop in Summer 2022, (c) be expected to teach a data science course, bootcamp or workshop, in their local region by December 2023.

Data in Ecology: This workshop uses a tabular ecology dataset from the Portal Project Teaching Database and teaches data cleaning, management, analysis, and visualization. There are no pre-requisites, and the materials assume no prior knowledge about the tools. We use a single dataset throughout the workshop to model the data management and analysis workflow that a researcher would use.

Data in Genomics: The focus of this workshop is on working with genomics data, and data management and analysis for genomics research, including best practices for organization of bioinformatics projects and data, use of command line utilities, use of command line tools to analyze sequence quality and perform variant calling, and connecting to and using cloud computing.

Geospatial data: This workshop is co-developed with the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON). It focuses on working with geospatial data - managing and understanding spatial data formats, understanding coordinate reference systems, and working with raster and vector data in R for analysis and visualization.

Social science data: This workshop uses a tabular interview dataset from the SAFI Teaching Database and teaches data cleaning, management, analysis and visualization. There are no pre-requisites, and the materials assume no prior knowledge about the tools. We use a single dataset throughout the workshop to model the data management and analysis workflow that a researcher would use.
