Good Neighbor Initiative Canvassing Signup
Good Neighbor Initiative Description

The Good Neighbor Initiative is a collaborative partnership between NC State University and the Hillsborough Street Community Service Corporation. This is a new initiative with an effort by NC State to make door-to-door visits to properties north of Hillsborough Street between Shepherd Street and Oberlin Road. The idea is to talk to off campus students in particular as we get underway with the academic year and make contact with non students who live in the local neighborhoods.

It is meant to be a brief visit sharing information with individuals who are home and leaving behind resources via a door hanger. The main point is to reinforce our goal for everyone to be a good neighbor. The Good Neighbor Initiative is about the promotion of a  positive living experience in those neighborhoods where students and non-students live in close proximity.

How to Get Involved

We will need 70-80 NC State employees to serve as volunteers for the three hour canvassing event with a goal to visit at least 1,000 homes in the surrounding neighborhoods. We already know that most of these neighborhoods are comprised of rental properties with NC State students.

Teams of 2-3 people will go door to door on assigned streets briefly talking to residents about being a good neighbor and sharing resources from NC State. Each visit is only meant to be 2-3 minutes long. The event will occur on Monday, October 7, 2019 starting at 1:30pm with an operational meeting. We will provide a brief overview of expectations and give out neighborhood assignments along with the resource door hangers at that time.

Please make sure you have approval from your supervisor to participate in this activity. After staff sign up there will be follow-up information sent from our planning team. This is a great way to give back, get out and out with some light walking exercise in your comfy shoes, and an opportunity to connect with our students and members of the local community. Are you able to drive during the event *
There are some neighborhoods that are a bit farther than would be prudent to walk to from campus. It will save time to have the team of 3-4 individuals drive to a convenient location on the streets/area assigned and then drive back to campus. We only anticipate needing 15-20 drivers total.
I understand that approval from my supervisor is required and I have discussed my plans to assist during the event with my supervisor. *
