Course of Scientific Writing
THIS COURSE IS MANDATORY FOR FIRST YEAR PHD STUDENTS.

The course aim is to give students practical tips and tricks about how to write a scientific paper and how the academic world works. The first block of the course will be held in two sessions: one for italian students that will be held in italian language, and the second one for international students that will be held later on during the year (probably May 2020) in english language.
The second block of the course will be held in english language for everyone during May 2020.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT FIRST YEAR STUDENTS MUST PARTICIPATE IN BOTH BLOCKS. OTHER PHD STUDENTS ARE FREE TO CHOOSE THE BLOCK THEY WANT (PROVIDED THAT THEY FOLLOWED THEIR MANDATORY COURSE DURING THE PREVIOUS YEARS).

FIRST BLOCK PROGRAM (Alberto Borboni, Nicola Pellegrini):
- Bibliographic databases for scientific research and patents
- How to use Scopus
- Bibliometric analysis of papers
- Manage your references using specific softwares
- Structure of a scientific paper
- Focus on writing style, language and terminology
- How to publish a paper? The editorial process
- Role of the researcher and why it is important to actively participate in research projects
- Ethics in research and how it works when publishing (Ethical Committee)
- Patents: structure, motivation and how to present a patent for approval
- Research projects: what these are and how they work?
- Calls for competitions (BANDI), structure of a proposal, networking, etc.
- Discussion with students on their personal cases

FINAL EXAM:
Each student must write a full page abstract following the guidelines given during the course.

- Structure of a technical essay
- Technical writing and structured writing
- Tips and tricks to write efficiently and effectively a technical essay
