the ayahuasca tea
A) Ayahuasca tea is used exclusively responsibly in religious rites, observing the principles of legality, morality, privacy, religious freedom (of belief and worship), freedom of expression, thought and creation, without association with any illicit psychoactive substance.
B) The religious use of Ayahuasca is recognized and protected by the Brazilian State through Resolution n. 01, published in the Official Gazette of January 25, 2010, of the National Council for Drug Policies – CONAD.
C) Ayahuasca is a drink that has psychoactive properties due to the presence, in the leaves of the Psychotria Viridis bush (Chacrona), of a substance called N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), whose molecule is similar to the serotonin molecule and is present in the human body. The tea also acts as a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor due to the action of β-carbolines (Harmine, Harmaline and Tetrahydrahamine), alkaloids present in the vine Banisteriopis Caapi (Jagube). If ingested alone, DMT is metabolized by MAO in the stomach without reaching the brain. However, the inhibitory effects of MAO enable the psychoactive action of DMT, acting on the serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine neurotransmitter circuits.
Scientific studies indicate that Ayahuasca has a good degree of tolerability and safety, with numerous evidences about its potential benefits, provided it is consumed in a protected context and with the necessary care. The use of Ayahuasca can imply intense personal experiences, whether physical, such as a tendency to increase blood pressure, among other sensations, and/or subjective, characterized by introspection, visions, experiences of personal memories and changes in the perceptive, affective, cognitive spheres and somatic, producing the subjective experience of well-being and alteration of consciousness.
D) In some cases there may be adverse effects such as nausea, restlessness and anxiety. There are certain pre-existing physical and mental health conditions in which Ayahuasca should not be used or consumed with caution, such as: people with cardiovascular problems or severe hypertension, people with a personal history or family history of serious mental disorders ( ex: psychoses, schizophrenia, mood disorders, personality disorders), epilepsy, fractures or recent surgeries (from 1 to 2 months after the procedure), acute infectious diseases, high-risk pregnancy. Ayahuasca should not be consumed or should be consumed with restriction when using certain medications, such as: antipsychotics (eg: chlorpromazine, levomepromazine, haloperidol, risperidon, olanzapine, clozapine, etc.); mood stabilizers (e.g. lithium, valproic acid, carbamazepine etc.); benzodiazepines (clonazepam, bromazepam, diazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam, etc.) and antidepressants or other substances with effects on serotonin levels (e.g. fluoxetine, paroxetine, venlafaxine , citalopram, sertraline, amitriptyline, bupropion, imipramine etc), including some medicinal plants (St. John's wort, ginseng). Medications classified as serotonergic substances, which increase serotonin levels in the brain, can cause a potentiation of the tea's effect, causing serotonergic syndrome, whose effects can be fatal. In cases of use of antidepressant drugs, the concomitant use of Ayahausca is forbidden, recommending discontinuity of use before consuming the tea.
E) Ayahuasca also interacts with other psychoactive substances, not being recommended for people who are using cocaine, dextromethorphan (DXM), amphetamines and methamphetamines (MDMA), ecstasy, mescaline, psilocybin, LSD.
