2022-2023 Contest Theme: Untold Stories
The people of Nebraska often highlight its major institutions, people, and milestones such as Buffalo Bill shows, the sandhill crane migration, the unicameral legislature, Memorial Stadium, and the Dust Bowl. This year’s contest theme asks emerging writers and artists to consider Nebraska’s “untold stories,” whether of hometown legends, unique flora, or off-the-beaten-path sites. Contestants might also consider stories that shed light on what the poet T. S. Eliot referred to in his poem “Gerontion” as history’s “cunning passages, contrived corridors,” like little-known aspects of the death of Crazy Horse at Nebraska’s Pine Ridge or the birth of Malcolm X in Omaha. Consider, too, “untold stories” about Nebraska's physical environment, its diverse population, challenges the state overcame, and other issues that remain to be addressed as we continue to forge a sense of what constitutes a Nebraskan.
