WORKSHOP 1: VIGNETTE 1
As the students entered the virtual classroom, the teacher, having muted everyone’s microphones, greeted all the students and then asked each student to answer the polling question on the screen. The teacher started the timer and the student responses began to populate in a graph for all to see. Students sent chat messages to the teacher stating, “I knew this answer from our lesson yesterday.” Another student chatted with the teacher and remarked, “This information was on the homework last night - I know I got this right!” Because the students could only chat with the teacher, the teacher felt comfortable with allowing the students to use this feature to express their thoughts as they answered the question, and the students knew they received “extra participation points”when chatting with the teacher that made relevant connections to teaching and learning. Once the timer rang, the polling was over and the results were reviewed by the teacher. The teacher unmuted the class to hear their immediate feedback. Students cheered as they saw how many students in the class got the question right. The teacher commented, “You guys are definitely ready for the test on Friday.” The students replied, “yes, we are!”
