Be part of leading FWEA! Member Committees and Task Forces for 2022-23
What are you passionate about as an ESP or Cert member? Let's make it happen!

FWEA is made up of members working to advance the best public schools for kids, educators and families. We invite all members to consider several opportunities to drive our association forward!

Committee descriptions: are below and you can select any you are interested in (please spread the word to members you recommend!) Our goal would be to select members across grade levels, schools etc. to have representative committees. ESPs and Certs can apply for all committees, except there are three ESP-only committees. You'll see some committees below which internal FWEA, and some that are FWEA-FWPS which are negotiated into our CBA. If we have way more applicants than spots, we will add some spots where possible and also work to make the committees as representative as possible.

Appreciation Honorariums: Honorariums of at least $75 will be given to each committee member largely from our NEA grant, which we were very fortunate to receive. The final honorarium amounts will differ by commitment, since some teams will meet only twice but some may meet monthly. (We will also have a better idea of the final amount once we know the sizes of the committees and the number of times committees will meet).

Meetings: Zoom is the default, but committee members can decide how and when they'd like to meet, with the caveat of selecting the mode that allows the most members to participate to include ESPs and late-start elementaries.

Expenses: The Committee would connect with the Executive Board about any major expenses that arise. All minor costs like materials, snacks etc. are automatically covered. We can make color copies, book a meeting space at WEA, advertise etc. for you as well.

The form: As you'll see, each committee has a different duration and start time, but would end in May. We will edit this form to close each committee depending on the time-sensitive needs of the team, and contact members if they have been selected. Please apply by adding your name and contact info below.

Is there committee that's missing or an effort that you would like to lead? Please email Shannon McCann at smccann@washingtonea.org or any of our amazing FWEA Executive Board Members!

For any questions, please call our FWEA Office at 253-838-8571 or tiafwea@aol.com.

Puget Sound Uniserv Council Delegate: PSUC represents 14 education association locals in our region, including FWEA. As a voting delegate, you would be lifting up FWEA voice, and voting on our behalf on important programs and direction for the region. Our own Shannon Rasmusson is the President of PSUC, and Daniel Harada is the BIPOC Representative on the PSUC Executive Board! There are 4 meetings during the year. There are 6 spots. We have one more spot!

FWEA Equity Commission: this group of members will examine and work to highlight and be parting of eliminating inequities/disproportionalities related of race, class, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, ability and any other equity interest the committee has. This group will be able to bring their creativity, and there is a budget for this work. This team will liaise directly with our BIPOC Representative and FWEA President, and would initiate immediate problem-solving as well as recommendations for the next full bargain.  We anticipate this team having approx: 10-12 members. Meets monthly, starting in January.
Clear selection
FWEA Educators of Color Network Committee: Each year, we hold a few FWEA Meet-Ups for Educators of Color as a casual yet important space for solidarity. We have been celebrating this for 6 years now, with a different member-led effort each year.  This team would be a temporary team to plan for BLM At School week, but could certainly discuss and decide upon any other ideas and projects! This team will be approx: 8-10 members. Meets starting in January and would work with Executive Board member Stephanie Price.
Clear selection
FWEA T-shirt and Swag Update Team: This team will help run a process to include member voice in updating our FWEA t-shirt design(s) and any other swag as the team sees fit. The team will likely meet 2-3 times. The team would liaise with Shannon McCann. Meets starting in late January.

Community Connector Team: This team of members is interested in the voices of our community and being active in community events such as Flavor of Federal Way, Federal Way Pride and more. They will be connecting with our various partners, families and any other groups the team believes advances our FWEA mission. Typically these relationships have happened in a more unstructured way, but especially this year, we believe a committee would be an exciting and coordinated step forward to include more members at more events etc. This committee would meet monthly (via zoom) and participate in any other engagements the committee decides upon. Meets starting in February.
Clear selection
Teri Packard Scholarship Committee: This small team reads through and considers the grant applications (graduating children of FWEA members) to award the annual Teri Packard scholarship. Teri was our powerhouse former FWEA President in the 90s and this scholarship was started in her memory. We are seeking one more member. This team would assemble in April and meets once or twice to accomplish this work.
Clear selection

We also are in touch frequently to support members and bring member voice to advocate and problem solve at the district level. The Athletic Coach seat is 1 year term. If we have more than one name, there will be an election.
Clear selection
ML (multi-lingual education) Committee: This is part of the new CBA language, which reads:

During the 2022-2023 school year, a multi-lingual advisory committee will be created and report back to FWPS and FWEA leadership by February 28th.

The committee will include representatives from TFL, SSS, and FWEA recommended multilingual certificated staff (2 from each level: elementary, middle and high), and special education and general education from each level (elementary, middle and high). This committee will review:

Clear selection
FWEA Leave Coach Team:  Many of our members need help when they are facing an extended leave.  What is the difference between FMLA and PFML?  How does our Wellness Leave interact with these benefits?  What is the best choice for me as I consider starting a family? How can I access intermittent leave as I battle this health condition?  There are so many questions, and our members need a team of coaches that can help them get the answers.  This team would liaise with WEA Uniserv Director and James Brown. Starts in January and meets monthly as a team, and when ready, with members as needed.
Clear selection
FWEA Constitution and Bylaws: It's good practice to review our Constitution and Bylaws (our governing documents) to be trained on a model constitution and bylaws ensure they are up-to-date and meet our needs. Starts in November.

FWEA Sunshine Committee: this team will do thoughtful small acts to support fellow FWEA members! We have a long-standing budget line to recognize and support members and your creative ideas are welcome! For example, this team will coordinate small treats to cheer up colleagues, send cards or flowers if a member is seriously ill, send a FWEA onesie if a member has a baby! This team could decide to do 2 social events for our membership too. This team will liaise directly with Tia Hendrix and be approx: 5-6 members and liaise with FWEA Office Manager Tia Hendrix and Executive Board member Elizabeth Benitez. Starts in February.
Clear selection
Certificated Evaluation Team: This team will be trained on the evaluation system and our contract language to be a resource and support for other members. This team will meet beginning in February, and meet 3-4 times (or more if desired) before supporting members.  This team will be 4-5 members.

What cool ideas do you want to try? This team will meet at least twice whole group, receive training as they see fit, and communicate via text/email/etc. as needed with their brilliant ideas! We anticipate this team having 4-6 members and be supported by Shannon McCann. Started in December, and seeking 2 more members!
Clear selection
ESP PD Committee: We have CBA language that we want to actualize. ESPs should be guiding the ESP PD that is given.
