NCP1808 Developing & continuing deep mathematical thinking in Early Years and beyond work group
The intention of this work group is to support a whole school dialogue and consistency in message as to how best practice in early years feeds into whole school ‘Teaching for Mastery’ provision. Currently the vast majority of TfM specialists are based in KS1/2 and feel they have limited understanding of EY maths practice. This work group seeks to ensure that good practice in the early learning of mathematics feeds into KS1 provision. This work group builds a whole school understanding of early maths and makes connections to the TfM model as and when appropriate. This work group involves school maths leaders and Reception class teachers with the support of the school’s leadership team.

Who is this for?
This work group is suitable for all schools seeking to develop their whole school approach to mathematics teaching – early years and upwards - and is particularly suited to schools adopting a ‘Teaching for Mastery’ approach.  This work group is for maths leaders (or TfM leaders) and Reception teachers in primary schools (including infant schools) to work together to gain a shared understanding of early mathematics best practice and whole school progression within a TfM approach.  Schools will work closely with a work group lead and will be supported to work within a small group of schools.

What is involved?

Maths leads and Reception teachers will:
Attend a face-to-face CPD event (full day) on 9 October 2019 (TBC)
Engage in substantial school-based development work with colleagues including reading, audit, assessment, planning and observation
Attend 4 half day regional group meetings
Maintain a development portfolio (as a school)
Attend an evaluation event (half day) on the morning of 16 June 2020 (TBC)

*A member of the school’s SLT will also be required to attend the morning of the face-to-face CPD event and the evaluation event (half day) in addition to supporting development work in school

Cost:

There is no cost to schools for participating in this work group but there is a commitment to ensuring that both the school’s Maths Lead and one Reception teacher (or Early Years Lead) are able to engage in all aspects of the programme (including attendance at all meetings and face-to-face sessions).  The school’s SLT must support their school’s involvement in this work group including sending one SLT member to two half day events.

Expectations of participants and their settings

Schools wishing to participate in this work group need to ensure that both their Maths Lead and Reception teacher (or Early Years Lead) can fully participate in this year long work group.  The Maths Lead and Reception teacher (or Early Years Lead) need to be supported to engage in development work in school as well as attend one face-to-face CPD day, four half day meetings and one half day evaluation event.  The school must have the capacity to support this development work including some SLT attendance.
