Patron's Programme: Mpho Machate

Thank you for venturing into our Patron’s Programme, aimed at encouraging your desire to get to know an artist and their work whilst also supporting their professional endeavour.

The intention of the programme is to create a closer and more symbiotic relationship between the selected artist and you as a collector, which we hope will enrich your appreciation of the creative process an artist undergoes.

You are completing this form because you are interested in contributing to Mpho's studio rental in lieu of you receiving an artwork (of your choosing) at the end of the agreed period.

This form is dedicated to Mpho Machate. Mpho's studio is located on the First Floor of August House, Studio 7. He has been at August House for just almost a 1 year.

Artist Bio:

Mpho M Machate was born in Tembisa hospital in 1984 and he grew up in the rural areas of Bushbuckridge, in Xanthia village, Mpumalanga. In his early years, Machate was fascinated with clay. He would create miniature animals, houses and car models while playing with his friends without knowing that this would lead to a career in Fine Art. His interest in nature (the lush vegetation) in the village and the views of the dramatic features of the Drakensberg Mountain in his backyard during the day, and the night time which provided a spectacle of stars, became a huge influence in his work.

Machate completed his studies with a B-Tech in Fine Art at the Tshwane University of Technology in 2016. His works form part of the private collection of the J.P Morgan Chase Art Collection and the Art Bank South Africa collecting for the National Museum Bloemfontein.

Mpho M Machate’s work is inspired by textured surfaces as the emphasis of existence, memory, and change; he attempts to symbolize the journey that we choose in life by representing texture as a topographical projection of thought in the process of making a decision. The idea is to highlight the journey towards self-actualization as the realization of the infinite creation. Machate archives this idea by means of a series of walks and observation of interesting textures that he sees and feels. These walks are for him the awareness of metacognition and the aspiration to realize the inner-self.

Machate investigate this notion by using concepts such as metaphysics and existentialism aimed at exploring the ‘theory of mind;’ that is “the nature and development of our understanding of the mental world... [which] refer to our ability to explain, predict and interpret behavior” (Papaleontiou-louca 2008:vii). In this case, his work becomes the abstraction of interpreted behavior as the viewer deconstructs and analyses the painting for personal understanding. His choice of material including but is not limited to; acrylic ink, cooking oil, oil paint, oil pastel, salt, metallic gel pens, metallic paint, acrylic paint, tea stains on paper or canvas.
