Mpho M Machate’s work is inspired by textured surfaces as the emphasis of existence, memory, and change; he attempts to symbolize the journey that we choose in life by representing texture as a topographical projection of thought in the process of making a decision. The idea is to highlight the journey towards self-actualization as the realization of the infinite creation. Machate archives this idea by means of a series of walks and observation of interesting textures that he sees and feels. These walks are for him the awareness of metacognition and the aspiration to realize the inner-self.
Machate investigate this notion by using concepts such as metaphysics and existentialism aimed at exploring the ‘theory of mind;’ that is “the nature and development of our understanding of the mental world... [which] refer to our ability to explain, predict and interpret behavior” (Papaleontiou-louca 2008:vii). In this case, his work becomes the abstraction of interpreted behavior as the viewer deconstructs and analyses the painting for personal understanding. His choice of material including but is not limited to; acrylic ink, cooking oil, oil paint, oil pastel, salt, metallic gel pens, metallic paint, acrylic paint, tea stains on paper or canvas.
