The Structural Engineers Association of New York (SEAoNY) is seeking our help for the annual "Shadow a Structural Engineer" Program for College Students. The purpose of the event is to show the students the day in the life as a practicing structural engineer. Students visit for roughly 3-4 hours, sometimes in small groups.
We matched over 90 students last year, thanks to our volunteers! It works best if firms sign up and rotate the students through several stations. If a few people per office volunteer, it might mean each person only needs to offer about an hour of their time. If individuals sign up, recruit your coworkers or feel free to host a student for a couple of hours on your own. No prep necessary, we usually show the students our current projects and give them an opportunity to ask questions. Dates and times will be flexible and coordinated after each firm/volunteer is paired with students. Dates will be March to early April.
Please fill out this form ASAP if you can help out. Ideally, we would get a good mix of entry level to midlevel managers so students can see how roles evolve with experience. You also do not need to be a member to volunteer. We can use all the help we can get! We unfortunately have to turn students away if we do not get enough professionals.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to studentoutreach@seaony.org.
