With a generous seed grant on behalf of the John P. Torgenson Donor Advised Fund at SEI Giving Fund, and in memory of Karen Reyes, Grand Canyon River Guides is proud to announce an annual scholarship to cover Wilderness First Responder tuition for individuals from the eleven Grand Canyon tribes.  Our hope is that this Indigenous WFR scholarship can help ease that path for the original stewards of Grand Canyon by facilitating and encouraging much needed diversity, equity, and inclusion in Grand Canyon’s outdoor industry workforce.  (PLEASE NOTE: THIS SCHOLARSHIP HAS NOW BEEN EXPANDED TO INCLUDE WFR RECERTIFICATION).

SCHOLARSHIP DETAILS

ELIGIBILITY
o Open to individuals from the eleven Grand Canyon tribes who are seeking an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder training (or a WFR Recert) as a springboard for working in the outdoor industry (river guide, hiking guide, science work, etc.) in Grand Canyon and beyond.  
o Must be at least 18 years of age.

APPLICATION DETAILS
o First come, first served basis until funds are gone each year  
o Open enrollment through the year
o Up to three scholarships are available per year, and possibly more as funds are available.
o  Applicants can request a partial scholarship.  

RECIPIENTS
o Recipients select the WFR provider and course dates that work for their schedule (note: we suggest Flagstaff Field Institute/NOLS), and recipients must comply with any COVID vaccination policy requirements.    
o If accepted, GCRG will pay WFR provider directly for tuition (Note: If you have already paid for part of your course, GCRG will refund you directly).
o If accepted, GCRG can provide recipients with a stipend to offset food/lodging expenses during the WFR course, up to a maximum of $550 for a Full WFR or $200 for a WFR Recert, payable to recipient.

WITHDRAWAL/CANCELLATION
o If you are accepted for this WFR scholarship and need to change, cancel or withdraw from the course, please contact GCRG immediately so that we can make those arrangements on your behalf.  
o Any cancellation must occur in accordance with the cancellation policy requirements specified by the WFR provider.
