Undergrads in Solidarity with the Grading Strike
On January 27, Chancellor Larive sent an email to all undergraduate and graduate students titled "Announcing two new programs for graduate students." In addition to a lowball offer of a $2,500 a year stipend, which only *some* graduate students could apply and compete for, she escalated threats to striking students. This is not a real Cost Of Living Adjustment (COLA) offer, but rather a veiled attempt to break the strike. UCSC, you cannot give us the tools to think critically and then expect us to fall for your deceptive emails.

Chancellor Larive inappropriately threatened grad workers with disciplinary action under the student code of conduct for deleting grades from Canvas. Her reasoning? She is "deeply concerned about the impact on undergraduates." If you want to bring charges against TAs for harming undergraduate students, you will need to listen to actual undergraduate students.

We, the below undergraduate students, want to let the administration know: WE HAVE NOT BEEN HARMED BY THE GRADING STRIKE. For most of us, there were no consequences for not receiving grades this quarter. For others, our TAs worked with us individually to ensure that we were not negatively affected. Our TAs are on the front lines, supporting undergrads daily. Unlike admin, they have shown deep concern for our wellbeing.

Chancellor Larive claims that she is worried about the grading strike "profoundly impacting" financial aid. However, due to the work of striking grads and the financial aid office, financial aid has NOT been affected by the grading strike. On the other hand, students with financial aid REGULARLY receive their aid late due to understaffing of the financial aid office. Chancellor Larive, if you really cared about undergraduate students, you would address this longstanding problem rather than threatening our TAs.

Your repeated attempts to pit undergraduate students against graduate students have failed. As graduate students have mentored, supported, and cared for us, we will, in turn, support and care for them. We do not ask that graduate students upload our grades; we demand that the administration pay their workers a living wage so that graduate students no longer face unstable and insufficient living conditions. We understand that their working conditions are our learning conditions, and we demand better!

Undergraduates stand in solidarity with the wildcat strikers. We support their withholding of grades until they get a COLA. We will not cave in our solidarity and will not stop pushing back against the administration until the graduate students receive it.
