DEVELOPING A RESEARCH QUESTION - Developing a research question is one of the early steps in writing a research paper.  At its core, a research question is a question that you want to answer using research. This definition makes research questions sound easy to develop, but they can be a challenge.  The video on the right is a good introduction to how to create a research question.  Watch it, and then answer the questions that follow.

A research question provides a clear direction for your research. *
Why do you need to read some background information before you develop your research question? *
Consider this research question: "Why are there so many homeless people here?"  Is it too broad, too narrow, or just right? *
Consider this research question: "Why are there so many homeless people here?"  Is it too broad, too narrow, or just right? *
Consider this research question: ""How does the closing of family homeless shelters in New York City affect the academic success of middle schoolers?” Is it too broad, too narrow, or just right? *
REVIEW IN ACTION: Read this one-page guide to developing research questions created by the Indiana University: https://libraries.indiana.edu/sites/default/files/Develop_a_Research_Question.pdf This guide helps you narrow down your topic (an important step in the research process that is not covered in this tutorial) and then develop a research question from your topic. Read the guide and answer the following question.

After you have your focused research question, what questions should you consider next as you start to research? *
