Which Way Individualism? Atlas Shrugged vs. Atlas Hugged. Featuring Michael Shermer and David Sloan Wilson
Which Way Individualism? Atlas Shrugged vs. Atlas Hugged.
Featuring Michael Shermer and David Sloan Wilson
Date/Time: March 10th, 12-1pm PT / 3-4pm EST

You are cordially invited to a live online conversation between Michael Shermer and David Sloan Wilson on Individualism, the dominant intellectual tradition of western culture for the last 70 years.

Individualism is the view that all things social can be reduced to the motives and actions of individuals. One version is the "greed is good" ideology of Ayn Rand, portrayed in her novel Atlas Shrugged. But that is not the only version and perhaps the entire tradition needs to be replaced by something more multilevel and holistic. That is the thesis of David Sloan Wilson's novel Atlas Hugged, written as both a sequel and antidote to Rand's novel.

Wilson and Shermer recently discussed Individualism through the lens of the two novels on his Skeptics podcast (https://www.skeptic.com/michael-shermer-show/david-sloan-wilson-atlas-hugged-individualism-objectivism-cooperation-altruism-collective-action/). In this encore performance sponsored by TVOL, they will recap and extend their conversation, leaving plenty of time for Q&A from the audience.

Listening to the Skeptics podcast and familiarity with the two novels will enhance your enjoyment of the TVOL conversation but is not necessary. Atlas Hugged can be read and enjoyed without reading Atlas Shrugged first.
