Lam Joar is originally from South Sudan. Lam fled South Sudan when he was 15 years to Kenya and became a refugee. Because of his exceptional athletic abilities, he was chosen by former world champion Tegla Loroupe among the first group of the Refugee Olympics in 2015.  In 2017, Lam decided to focus on his higher education and was awarded a scholarship to complete his undergraduate degree. He transitioned to working for the Refugee team through the Tegla Loroupe Peace Foundation and became the Camp Coordinator for the Refugee Olympics Team. Lam was the Refugee Olympics Team Assistant at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Lam graduated with a master’s degree in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies from the University of Oxford. His master's research focuses on “How Participation in Elite Sport Shape Refugees’ Integration and Belonging”, a case study for the refugee Olympics Team. Lam is now the Programmes Officer at One Young World, based in London.
