Our primary fall craftivism initiative through the Creative Co-op at Jandon, Woven Words, was inspired by the Mini Banner Project designed by the Craftivist Collective to create an opportunity for gentle protest by way of needlepoint, sewing, embroidery, and/or cross-stitch.
Creating small, beautiful banners instead of large, bold banners can actually carry significant impact and allow stitchers an opportunity to engage in a peaceful, soothing, therapeutic experience.
Speaking of experience, no stitching experience is required to partake in this initiative. We will provide simple to follow instructions in your packet and suggest you watch the lovely videos created by the Craftivist Collective [below] for detailed instruction of the Why? and How? to become a craftivist.
We encourage you to stitch your voice in a thoughtful, positive, and meaningful way. While selecting your message, consider how you, as a global citizen, can strive to be part of the solution by addressing a concerning issue. Allow compassion and understanding to guide you, as opposed to finger pointing and blame. Statistics, facts, quotes, and questions are good starting points for your message.
The location in which you place your banner is as important as the message you wish to send. You may elect to hang your message in public, save it, or add it to our installation.
The following form allows you to add a custom touch to your creative banner. Please complete the fields below to select your fabric, floss [thread] colors, embellishments, and yarn color for hanging. We will also ask for your mailing address to ship the kit directly to you.
If you elect to save or hang your banner in a meaningful location near you, please email a photo of your finished work to Deborah at
dday@smith.edu so that we may add it to our Craftivism archives.
We look forward to seeing your finished Woven Words project and appreciate your participation!
