When One Door Opens: Interactive Theatre
The phases of application for tenure and promotion are established by university policy and by law, but the process is shaped by implicit and explicit values and behaviors that affect decision-making. This workshop presents a fictional scenario of an appeals hearing for one such application. The narrative is framed by a colleague presenting their perspective on the experiences of the professor appealing their decision. We see, through flashbacks, various moments in the professor’s time at the university where the process may be challenged through bias. As the story unfolds, facilitated discussion invites participants to question the characters and even to redirect the action by requesting alternate scenarios that support --or impede-- inclusion and diversity.
