Smell Studies Seminar: Ancient Aromas
27th September 16:00-17:30 BST (17:00-18:30 CEST)

Part of a set of 5 online panels organised by Dr William Tullett as part of the EU Horizon 2020 funded 'Odeuropa' project.

Smell experts from different disciplines will provide short (15 minute presentations), followed by time for discussion between panel members and the audience.

The first week's panel will be:

Barbara Huber, whose work is tracing the global dimensions of the dispersal of ancient aromatics and spices throughout Asia and East Africa using biochemical and biomolecular analyses to characterize organic remains. Barbara's methodology is explored in her recently published article in Nature. You can also find out more about Barbara's work here: https://www.shh.mpg.de/person/100725/25522.

Sean Coughlin, whose project Alchemies of Scent is hoping to understand the practice of ancient Egyptian and Greek perfumery, to study and establish its place in the history of chemistry and science, and to examine the changing connections between art, craft, science and culture in the ancient Mediterranean world. You can find out more about the project here: https://www.alchemiesofscent.org

Mario Baumann, a scholar of classical literature whose recent work has been examining literary representations of scent and odourlessness and who has co-organised a major conference on 'Experiencing smell and taste in the Greco-Roman world' in Dresden. You can find more about Mario's work here: https://tu-dresden.de/gsw/slk/klassphil/das-institut/beschaeftigte/jun-prof-dr-mario-baumann
