Shop Agreement for 4-409
Welcome!
The Edgerton Center Student Project Lab (room 4-409) is home to a community of students who meet to tinker, experiment, design, build, learn, and have fun while doing it.

The policies and protocols below help us keep the space safe and accessible for MIT students.

Please read closely, complete the specified training programs, and confirm your agreement to follow the rules. Failure to comply with the following policies may result in loss of access!

4-409 is a Shared Space
Please be mindful of the fact that 4-409 is a shared space with many uses - along with being a busy student Makerspace, we also host classes, workshops, seminars and other events. Please keep the space safe, clean, and accessible to all.

Check the schedule for classes and workshops on the door or the Edgerton Center website to see when classes and workshops take place.
Required Safety Training
We require general shop safety training to be completed on ATLAS.
Look for these required courses:
  • Hazard Communication
  • Intro to MIT Shop Safety Rules
You can find these by going to Learning Center -> My Profile -> Join Another Group -> DLC Specific -> Edgerton Center Community Member -> Join Group. This will add them under "My Training Needs".
General Use of Tools and Materials
  • Only use tools you know how to use safely and appropriately.
  • Return tools to their designated (color-coded or labeled) area once you are done with them.
  • You may freely use any common materials in the shop (below the laser cutter/3D printer/vinyl cutter, on the stock racks, in the materials closet, in and by the electronics cabinet, in the hardware drawer).
  • Tools are intended for use in 4-409 only. Some hand tools can be borrowed on occasion... please email 4-409staff@mit.edu and ask first.
  • If we are running low or you need a specific item, tell us and we'll likely order it.
Project Storage
We have very limited space for project storage in 4-409.
  • Only store projects that you are actively working on - do not store cruft, extra supplies, materials, or anything else that isn't related to an active project.
  • Place all projects in appropriate bins marked with your name, email address, and an expiration date (bins and yellow tape for labeling can be be found on the high shelf by the materials racks in the back of the room).
  • Projects should only be stored neatly on the shelves underneath the tables.
  • Do not leave projects or materials out on tables or the floor. If you are working on a large project or something needs to dry/set overnight, etc, you must email 4-409staff@mit.edu and let us know before you leave the shop.
Items stored under the tables are not for general use - if you didn't put it there, don't touch it!

While we will do our best to accommodate storage needs, please note that we will occasionally clean out storage areas and remove old or unlabeled projects and materials with or without notice.
Cleaning
When you are done working in 4-409, you must clean up after yourself. If you can, please take an extra moment to leave the space nicer than you found it.
  • Clean surfaces with dustpan or vacuum.
  • Return tools to their appropriate locations.
  • Do not leave food, crumbs or wrappers out for the mice.
  • Most types of trash can be placed directly in the trash bin - ask if you are unsure.
  • Dispose of all batteries in the white tub by the door (tape off leads).
  • Dispose of sharps in the container located in the X-acto Knife drawer in the red tool chest.
  • Reduce, reuse, recycle: use left-over scraps before large sheets; return parts if unneeded; know how to recycle.
Hazardous Materials
  • Return hazardous materials to the flammables cabinet; keep it closed unless actively removing or returning an item.
  • Be sure to read all labels for dangers and instructions.
  • Use compatible gloves around sensitizers like epoxy and strong adhesives.
  • We have no fume hood, so operate near the window if using items with hazardous (or just smelly) fumes. No spray-painting in 4-409 - take it elsewhere.
  • Stand away from respiratory hazards like pouring sand or cleaning vacuum filters.
  • No spray-painting in 4-409 - take it elsewhere.
  • We use leaded solder so be sure to wash your hands after soldering.
  • Only use laser cuttable items in the laser cutter. If it's not wood, paper, cardboard, or acrylic, ask first!
Working in the Cage
The limited-access tool cage in 4-409 is usually open during staff and mentored hours. Mentors and staff reserve the right to ask you to leave the cage so they can lock up.

Cage-specific policies:
  • fold/tie back loose clothing (hoodie strings, etc) and long hair (hair ties are available).
  • no open-toed shoes in the cage (slides, flip-flops, berks, etc).
  • wear appropriate safety goggles (over glasses if necessary) and return them to the designated PPE area in the cage.
  • Wear earplugs or earmuffs while operating loud machines.
  • make sure others in the cage are wearing safety glasses and hearing protection before operating tools.
  • do not bring unnecessary obstructions (chairs/stools, backpacks, etc) into the cage.
  • ask for training before using unfamiliar equipment.
  • if something sounds wrong or breaks, stop and ask for assistance. (Don't forget to tag broken machines and notify staff).
  • know the hazards and safety features of everything you use.
  • keep hands out of the way of blades - use scrap materials to push items, brushes or vacuum to clean.
  • never wear gloves near machines.
  • besides the laser cutter, you should NEVER operate tools in the cage without another person nearby.
  • do not operate machinery while distracted, or leave unattended. Do not distract others who are operating machinery.
  • do not leave the laser cutter unattended.
  • reset machines when done: remove and return bits, return machines to default or locked positions, vacuum the machine, floor, and work area.
Keyholders: place the keys back in the lock box and secure it immediately. Never leave the key in the cage door or take it with you, even if you are opening the kitchen/conference room.
Emergencies
  • First aid kits are located by the door and the sink.
  • We have few chemical hazards - but, if needed, we have a portable eye-wash kit located by the sink.
  • MIT's fire policy is to run away; small laser cutter fires that do not self-extinguish can be handled with a small spray can extinguisher.
  • For large emergencies, Dial 100 on the institute phone or call 617-253-1212 as MIT Police/EMS can more easily locate you.
