Safer Roads around Hyde Park School
Children at Hyde Park School wrote to the Council pleading for better road safety, saying how scared and annoyed they were at the dangerous parking near their school.
Even with double yellow lines, restricted parking, and enforcement cameras, some parents are putting their and other children’s lives at risk by driving and parking next to the school. Even a few minutes of illegal parking on Hermitage and nearby roads can be dangerous, and has been causing anger and confrontation between parents and local residents.
Although more enforcement of illegal parking would help, officers can’t be outside the school gates all the time. To significantly improve the current problems of dangerous parking we need parents, the School and Council to work together to discourage car travel to and from school, and encourage children to travel to school by foot or bike. These need to be both safe and convenient, and fit within the schedules of busy working parents.
With the vast majority of pupils within 20 minutes walk of the school, initiatives such as a School Walking Bus can provide new solutions to safe travel, so we’d like to hear your ideas on how the situation can be improved.
