Application to Attend Alaska Mining Impacts Collective In-person Meeting: October 4-5, 2022 in Anchorage, AK
In Anchorage, Alaska on Tuesday, October 4 and Wednesday, October 5, 2022 Alaska Conservation Foundation will host a two-day in-person meeting with a maximum of 35 individuals to officially launch a mining impacts collective. To participate in meeting, please apply by 11:59 PM AKT on Wednesday, September 14.
Context:
Alaska Conservation Foundation (ACF) is working to support a community-driven process to convene a new state-wide collective of individuals and organizations coalescing around industrial-scale hardrock mining issues across Alaska.
ACF believes industrial-scale mining for metals and minerals is the next big extractive resource development threat in our historically resource extractive state. ACF aims to support communities facing current and potential mining projects. For a just transition, future metal and mineral extraction to build the clean energy economy must consider the potential impacts it will have on local communities, and ACF is committed to preventing our communities from becoming "sacrifice zones." After the Alaska Conference on Mining Impacts and Prevention (March, 2022), ACF asked how/if we should continue to support mining impacts and prevention efforts. Conference participants overwhelmingly stated the need for ACF to play a continued convener role to support further community development, relationship building, communication, and coordination. This is why we are starting the process of launching a mining impacts collective, with the longer-term goal of this collective being self-sustaining.
COVID-19: Alaska Conservation Foundation is committed to creating a safe space. COVID measures will be put in place including daily testing.
