HSS at 100: Call for Proposals: Events

2024 will mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the History of Science Society. To mark the occasion, HSS is looking to organize and co-sponsor programming that looks at the history of science as a field and/or HSS over the past century and asks, “Where have we been? Where are we now? Where do we want to be?”

The HSS Centennial Committee is seeking proposals for in-person and online events (including talks, workshops, film screenings, trivia nights - you name it!), written series, social media series, or anything you can think of that looks at the history of the history of science. We welcome any and all ideas relating to the history of the field or the history of HSS as an organization. These events will be part of our two year-long “centenary celebration,” which will kick off at the annual meeting in Chicago in 2022 and culminate at the annual meeting in Merida in 2024. You can submit a program in one of two categories:

Co-sponsorship of existing programming: Are you already planning an event in your HSS committee, caucus, or forum, your own home institution, or another organization that you’re a member of, that would be a good fit for this centenary celebration? We’d love to hear about it and potentially co-sponsor it! The Centennial Committee will help publicize your event, and may be able to help with organizational labor.

New programming: Do you have an idea for a new event, blog series, TikTok challenge, or other idea that celebrates the history of history of science? Pitch it to us!

Please submit a short (max. 500 words) description of your proposal to the Centennial Committee by January 20, 2023. Please include any timing constraints you may have for this event in your email (e.g., any dates that work well or do not work between now and November 2024), as well as any other potential logistical needs (e.g. Zoom access, physical space, etc.). The Committee will respond to proposals by February 24, 2023.
