Writing from Both Ends of the Stethoscope: Surviving Medical Illness and Medical Training

Hello everyone,

You are cordially invited to "Writing from Both Ends of the Stethoscope: Surviving Medical Illness and Medical Training" on Thursday, October 12th at 5:30 pm

While this event is hosted by Stanford MSDCI (Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness), anyone and everyone is welcome to join!

In this discussion, psychiatrist and poet Celeste Lipkes will use poems from her new book Radium Girl to explore the challenges of navigating medical training as a person with chronic illness. We will think together about childhood trauma, the strengths and challenges of entering medicine as a person with health challenges, and ways that institutions can recruit and support trainees with illness and/or disability.

Celeste Lipkes is a psychiatrist, patient, and writer whose debut poetry collection, Radium Girl, was published this spring by the University of Wisconsin Poetry Series. Prior to medical school she completed her MFA in poetry at the University of Virginia. She works as a staff inpatient consult psychiatrist at the Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville, North Carolina.

When: Thursday, October 12th at 5:30 pm

Where: Zoom (link will be emailed to everyone who RSVPs!)

We can't wait to see you all there!

With love,
Your Stanford MSDCI team <3

Hosted by Stanford's Chapter of MSDCI: Medical Students with Disability and Chronic Illness (MSDCI) provides a support system and platform for advocacy for students with disabilities and chronic illness. We are also opening the conversation about the difficulties of becoming a healthcare provider while having personal experiences with illness and disease, and how these experiences can better inform our colleagues and patient care. We are committed to increasing resources and accessibility for MD and PA students living with disability/chronic illness at Stanford and in medicine as a whole.

Image Description of Form Header: A rectangular photo with a deep red background and white text in the center, saying "MD/PA Students with Disability and Chronic Illness." Beneath the text, there are 4 white illustrations.
