Actions within Trinity
Ask Black, Indigenous and People of Color speakers to come to Trinity to conduct workshops on issues that are important to them as Black, Indigenous and People of Color as well as what we might do to help end racism and white privilege.
Attend a meeting, physically or virtually, that is led by, and primarily attended by Black, Indigenous and People of Color, to listen and learn in an environment where whiteness is de-centered.
Build relationships with majority-Black Methodist or UCC churches in our region, perhaps partnering with their identified social justice projects in their communities or simply taking their lead and supporting their work.
Form a group to identify Black, Indigenous and People of Color organizations that do anti-racist work and financially support them with special offerings.
Form a team that works towards anti-racism within Trinity, with a place for Black, Indigenous and People of Color congregants and staff.
Help Trinity prioritize use of Black, Indigenous and People of Color-owned businesses in Austin. Establish relationships with them (perhaps list them on our website).
Identify ways to help Trinity people who might not have technology and are not able, or choose not, to engage via a weekly Zoom call with this work.
Organize group political letter-writing campaigns to support changes to laws/regulations/practices specifically affecting Black, Indigenous and People of Color.
Participate in the local and/or national branch of the Poor People’s Campaign.
Reach out to Austin Health Commons to see if they would facilitate a racial healing group (a formatted event they have conducted in other settings) for Trinity.
Solicit volunteers to speak during Sunday services for a short period (maybe five minutes) about something they learned from reading an appropriate book.
Support RAICES to defend the rights of immigrants and refugees, empower individuals, families, and communities, and advocate for liberty and justice.
Use artists and speakers to expand the voices and images of Black, Indigenous and People of Color’s experience (example presentations in Sunday services).
Use Trinity newsletters, publications and other media to inform the congregation of ways to connect and partner with Black, Indigenous and People of Color organizations by showing up as a congregation to participate as needed, e.g. Black Lives Matter and Undoing white supremacy.
Work with others in collective organizing of white people to dismantle systemic racism and white supremacy in the same way that we have supported LGBTQ communities.
Work with UCC (examples: to support internet access for low-income families in their homes, COVID-19 phone justice for families with incarcerated loved ones, and media ownership diversity).
Explore ways Trinity can participate in making Reparations.
