Join us for a beginner warbler walk and exploration of a unique habitat that draws a wide variety of neo-tropical migrants—warblers, tanagers, cuckoos and more (but not a lot of birders). Trip leader, Mari Badger, will focus on beginning warbler ID skills and song. Navigating the orchard is fairly easy so small groups can break off and easily reconvene along the way. We will have binoculars for use available!

ABOUT HEALD ORCHARD: This 80-acre former apple orchard is managed by the Town of Pepperell. It is an excellent example of early succession habitat—a landscape in transition from farm to something more wild. The property is currently managed as an intentional mosaic that includes wet areas, shrubs, grasslands, early forest, and a small pond to preserve habitat for species of concern. A larger pond, wetlands, a rocky ravine, and mature forest border the property.

Such habitat diversity means a diversity of species. Low trees also make it an ideal spot for beginning birders looking to gain familiarity with (i.e. actually see) a variety of species—especially warblers—compare songs, observe cool behavior or get a decent photo of a warbler. Regulars include Indigo Bunting, Rose-breasted Grosbeak, Bobolink, Field Sparrow, Blue-Winged Warbler, Bay Breasted Warbler, Cape May Warbler, and other warbler species.

ACCESSIBILITY: We will be walking mostly on mowed grassy and sometimes muddy paths that are not wheelchair accessible. Expect 2.5 to 3.5 miles of hilly and often wet walking. Paths can be extremely muddy in sections. Birders are expected to stay on paths to protect ground-nesting species.This is not an accessible location for those who cannot hike 2.5 - 3.5  miles in hilly sometimes muddy terrain.

PLEASE NOTE: There are no bathrooms on site. The closest one is at the Cumberland Farms gas station at 121 Main St, Pepperell, MA 01463. There are also a few eating establishments nearby but they will not be open until later. If you come through Groton Center, you will have more options for food and facilities. Tick protection especially for legs and ankles, such as long pants and gaiters treated with permethrin, is strongly advised. Mosquitoes can be a problem in early morning as well. Be prepared with water and snacks, dress in layers for changing temperatures. In the event of more than drizzle forecasted, we will postpone the walk.

DIRECTIONS: From Pepperell Town Hall, head north on Park Street and take the first left onto Heald St. Follow Heald St. for 1.5 miles; Look for an unmarked dirt parking area on your left that is near a water tank surrounded by chain link.
