What we do immediately before and immediately after a formal learning experience may matter as much as the learning experience itself.
The research is clear and adamant- getting students cognitively active in processing information yields significant learning effects.
Let's spend the day exploring, discussing, engaging in, and designing activity structures for accomplishing two jobs:
- Getting students' minds active and engaged; stirring up the pot so-to-speak, calling onto prior knowledge, and contextual skills before studying it - to become ACTIVATORS of their learning!
- Getting students cognitively active in summarizing for themselves what was important, what they have learned, how it is important, and/or how it fits with what they already know - to become SUMMARIZERS of their learning!
