Organization and Structure
We strive to maintain a board that has a diversity of professional and personal experiences to draw upon, and who all share a commitment to finding human-centered approaches and protecting the dignity for each person we work with on their path to housing stability.

Currently, we are looking for new board members with professional and personal experience in finance and budgeting; human resources and human resources law; foundation fundraising; and health care, including mental health support.

JOIN currently employs 57 full-time staff. Currently the cast majority of staff members are dedicated  to direct service through street outreach, housing placement, housing retention, case management, staffing our drop-in center, and landlord advocacy. We have eight program coordinators (family services, InReach, Day Space, Mobile Permanent Supportive Housing,  Outreach, Retention, data and evaluation, and Landlord Recruitment and Retention), two data team members, a development associate, an immersion coordinator, one administrative assistant, and an Accounts Receivable/Accounts Payable Specialists. At the director level we have an Executive Director, a Finance Director, a Director of People and Culture, a Development Director, a Director of Programs, and a Director of Equity and Inclusion.

JOIN is striving to be an anti-racist organization and is committed to preserving the dignity, humanity, and uniqueness of each person that we work with on their path back to housing stability. For more detailed information about JOIN’s Equity Initiative, please see: https://joinpdx.org/equity/

JOIN’s Board strives to reach decisions by consensus but will decide by majority vote when necessary. JOIN has as horizontal a management arrangement as possible with the emphasis on cooperation, compromise, and teamwork.

Time Commitment
We expect Board members to attend monthly board meetings and be involved in at least one committee or team. Teams may be ad hoc (e.g. event specific) or ongoing (e.g. finance or fundraising) and will meet with varying frequency. The full Board meets the third Friday of the month from 12-1:30pm, currently via zoom.

The time commitment for a typical board member is 3-5 hours per month. Officers and team leaders  often contribute 6-10 hours per month or more.

JOIN also holds an annual board retreat to learn more from the staff about the work, progress and challenges, set goals and direction for the next fiscal year and to provide  guidance to the budget process. This is an all day process, and we will devote one Winter Saturday to it.

Board terms are one year renewable and we ask for at least a two-year commitment to start.

Financial Commitment
Having full support of the board of directors to JOIN’s mission and being investors in the work is important. We ask that Board members give what for them is a significant financial contribution to JOIN. This can be structured in the way that best meets your needs (e.g., monthly or annual giving).

We also ask board members to actively represent JOIN and purposefully network on JOIN’s behalf.  Board Members commit to becoming active spokespeople and advocates for JOIN within their own social circle as well as the community at large, including in supporting an annual fundraising campaign to support JOIN’s work.

We hope that you will apply for JOIN’s board by filling out the application below.
