FOMR’s Benthic Monitoring Program collects aquatic bugs (macroinvertebrates) from the Middle River
and assesses river health by comparing bugs tolerant of pollution with those less tolerant. It’s fun and
vital to FOMR’s stewardship of the Middle River.
Monitoring involves wading into the stream and using a seine net (takes 2 people) to collect aquatic
bugs. The net with the bugs is then spread out on a table and the bugs are picked out of the net ,
identified and then placed back in the stream. You will have an opportunity to do it all. It’s fun and a
great way to find out what lives in the river.
WHEN: Sunday, May 19, 2024 at 1 pm.
WHERE (LOCATION CHANGED 5/16): Sandy Bottom Park and Golf Course, 610 East College Street, Bridgewater, VA 22812. Lat/Long of the parking lot: 38.370704, -78.965264
If you follow the road to the left continue driving down until you dead end in a small parking lot with a bathroom area in the corner. The river and picnic tables are directly next to the parking area. We will be set up there for the discussion, sampling bugs, and pizza at the end.
INCLEMENT WEATHER: There is no rain date. If weather prevents us from holding this event, we will
have to cancel. If water levels are just too high, we may also be unable to proceed. You will be notified
of any cancellation.
WHAT TO BRING: If you want to wade in the stream to collect bugs, you will need waders or high boots.
(If water and weather are warm enough, sneaks or river shoes will be fine.) Be aware that the river rocks
can be very slippery. Wading or hiking staffs/poles can be helpful.
Please bring a stool, chair or 5 gal. bucket to sit on if you want to sit around the table to pick bugs. Also,
it’s helpful to have a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, water or drinks, snacks (there will be pizza afterwards)
and reading glasses (if you have them) – these guys can be pretty small. Weather appropriate clothes,
that can get a little wet are a good idea (especially if you’re wading).
Please let us know if you can come.
Thanks!
