Importance of C&E Footprinting

Since the industrial revolution began three centuries ago, humans have used 40% of the known 50 Zeptojoules of fossil fuel reserves. Fossil fuels will exhaust well within this century (a phenomenon known as peak oil), and over 80 non-renewable ores will deplete drastically. No alternate energy source that can replace fossil fuels is in sight.
The use of such large quantities of fossil fuels has pumped >2,000 Giga Tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere and has caused a global average temperature rise of 1oC over pre-industrial times. Readings taken at NOAA's Mauna Loa Atmospheric Baseline Observatory recored an CO2 levels peaking at 417.5ppm in May.   To avoid runaway temperature rise that will tip off unstoppable feedback mechanisms, the 2015 inter-government Paris Agreement desired that we limit temperature rise to <1.5-2oC. Accordingly, countries made non-binding pledges to control their emissions. But even if these pledges are fully implemented, temperature rise by 2100 is expected to be 3-4oC and even a mean temperature rise of 1.5C will severely impact some parts of the world.
Human society is in a truly unsustainable mode. The root cause of climate change lies in our unending quest for growth. There is an urgent need to reduce global energy consumption and carbon emissions, for which we must also become a more equitable society. An important first step to move in this direction is to learn how to compute and understand carbon and energy footprints for individuals, organizations, transport and nations. A carbon foot print is the amount of direct of indirect carbon that is released into the atmosphere due to human activity.

Mr. Sagar Dhara
Mr. Dhara, is a former environmental engineering consultant to the UN Environment Programme, a university teacher, and a director of Envirotech Consultants in New Delhi. He is a published writer on and energy (Power) expert and advises people’s movements on the environmental impacts of industry.

Panelists:
Mr. Nikhil Vedprakash: Previously an Inter State electricity trader and Consultant for The Renewable Energy Certification Mechanism. He is well versed with the Electricity Act 2003 and various State Electricity Regulations. He will take us through how the electrical grid is structured and functions in India.

Mr. Kasyap Dalal: Director of Tech. Solar Pvt. Ltd. A company that develops technology powered by solar energy. Mr. Dalal has always spent many years working in the power and telecom. sector. He will share with us his valuable insights on Solar Tech. and micro India specific realties that affect transitioning to renewables.
