Light Sword Class Safety Rules

1. Your job is to NOT HIT YOUR PARTNER while making it LOOK LIKE you will! This is choreography, not combat.

2. You practice with a partner, not an opponent. Work together.

3. Never cross swords, for any reason, without the other person being aware of what you’re doing. No sneak attacks!

4. Always practice slowly at first. Speed comes later.

5. While exceedingly rare, most injuries are from muscle, ligament, and tendon trauma. Always warm up and stretch properly.

6. Be aware of your surroundings. Look around as you step onto the floor.

7. Do not drive your opponent into the wall, hazard, or other students.

8. Inspect your sword. Make sure the blade is tight and doesn’t have cracks.

9. Keep a safe distance. Crashing together is a sign of a distance problem.

10. Intense, exciting battles are the goal, but hitting someone else is not!

If you feel angry or aggressive (or you see it in your partner), these are signs of the Dark Side. It’s okay to LOOK aggressive, but you shouldn’t FEEL that way. Take a minute to cool down.

All Members and guests of the Madison Fencing Academy are expected to follow the rules and regulations. Failure to follow these rules will be grounds for dismissal from the Academy. We take a very hard line when it comes to safety. We want you to enjoy lightsaber fights for years to come and not stop due to injury.
