SMART Goals Questionnaire
S.M.A.R.T. goals are designed to help you identify if what you want to achieve is realistic and determine a means to accomplish your goal by a certain deadline. S.M.A.R.T. goals are designed to help you succeed by aligning your desire to achieve a result with your specific circumstances.

Below you will create a S.M.A.R.T. goal by completing each section as instructed. Your S.M.A.R.T. goal will not address what type of internships you will be seeking, but rather how you will go about finding them. After completing all the sections, you will write your final S.M.A.R.T. goal on the second page of this form and you will upload your final document to your assigned Washington Program folder. Washington Program staff will later check in with how your goal is helping you succeed in your internship search.

Cohort (i.e. Summer 2024) *
SPECIFIC: Be specific!
What do you specifically want to accomplish? When do you want to do this? May include times and days.

Example: Specific: "I will search for internships from 1:30 to 2:00pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays each week."
Not Specific: "I will look for internships each week."
*
MEASURABLE: Your goals must be measurable!
You must be able to measure your progress so that you will know if you've successfully met your goal.

Example: Measurable: "I will apply to 2 internships per week."
Not Measurable: "I will apply to internships each week."
*
ATTAINABLE: Be realistic!
The amount of effort required to achieve the goal must be realistic and in alignment with the amount of
time you have, your skill sets, and should not be so overwhelming that you will not have the willpower to stick with them over time.

Example: Attainable: “I will dedicate 20 minutes from noon to 12:20 every other day to editing my documents.”
Not Attainable: “I will not go out or have fun or do ANYTHING except work."
*
RELEVANT: Appropriate for changing circumstances
Why am I setting this goal now? Is it aligned with overall objectives as I currently understand them?

Example: Relevant: “If I haven’t secured an internship by May 15, I will increase my application rate to 3 applications per week.”
Not Relevant: “My original goal was amazing and will make sense forever and ever.”
*
TIME-BASED
What's the deadline and is it realistic?

Example: Time Based: “I will work to secure an internship by May 15th.”
Not Time Based: "Meh, it’ll work out eventually....”
*
FINAL SMART GOAL
Review what you have written, and craft a new goal statement based on the answers to the questions
above.

Example: “I will apply to 20 internships before my ‘leave’ date. I will do this by searching for internships Sunday through Tuesday, revising materials Wednesday through Friday, and submitting 5 applications on Saturday and Sunday each week. Each application will be recorded in my log."
