In June 2023, graduate workers at Stanford University overwhelmingly voted yes for official recognition of our union. We recognized the necessity of a collective voice to advocate for improved working conditions that reflect the value we bring to Stanford through our teaching and research efforts.
Since bargaining began in November 2023, we have made it clear that we need change. Through testimonials, rallies, chants, and picketing, we have made significant progress, achieving victories such as an agency shop that strengthens our collective power, an independent grievance procedure, expanded appointment safety and transparency, protections against unfair discipline and discharge, and inclusive work environment guidelines.
However, nearly a year into bargaining, Stanford has yet to provide:
- Wages in line with the cost of living
- Fair benefits
- Timely and fair non-discrimination procedures
- A codified five-year funding guarantee
Stanford's obstinacy at the bargaining table has left us no choice but to prepare for a strike. Winning the contract we deserve requires unity. Signing this pledge is a symbol of solidarity among coworkers in our shared goal of receiving the wages, benefits, and protections we deserve.
Some high level questions about going on strike are answered in our short strike FAQ and in more detail in our verbose strike FAQ.
By signing, I pledge that if we collectively vote to authorize a strike, I will publicly stand with my coworkers during our strike and withhold both my research and teaching labor.
