In response to multiple requests from members of the University of Pennsylvania and its outside community who either are at risk of witnessing an opioid overdose or have already witnessed one, MERT has developed an opioid overdose and reversal training program to address the opioid crisis affecting Philadelphia and the country as a whole.
The training session will be taught by EMTs from MERT, and will include information about how to recognize an opioid overdose, how to respond to an opioid overdose as a bystander with naloxone (Narcan), and how to obtain naloxone.
With naloxone (Narcan) nasal spray recently approved by the FDA as of 3/29/23 as an over-the-counter medication that no longer requires a prescription, this paves the way for more and more people to be able to access naloxone and be prepared for opioid overdose emergencies. Getting trained in recognizing signs and symptoms of opioid overdoses and using naloxone would be a great way to contribute to the safety of your community.

In addition, there is a Penn-wide virtual opioid overdose training conducted by Rachel McFadden, RN in collaboration with MERT that is held on the first Friday of every month from 12-1 PM. More information can be found
