The Dr. Frank Zaldivar ALMA SCIENCE ACADEMY & MENTORSHIP PIPELINE is run by GREEN-MPNA, a community-based organization in Santa Ana, California. The heart of the program is a multi-grade level after school and summer program that builds science skills and identities among youth. Undergraduate mentors play key supporting roles.
Mentors attend ALMA’s Saturday sessions in Santa Ana throughout the academic year, meeting at James Madison Elementary 8:45am-10:45 for the High School Program, or 10:45-1:30 for the Elementary and Middle School Programs. Mentors work in pairs, leading small groups of elementary, middle or high school students. This allows mentors the opportunity to develop meaningful personal relationships with younger students while guiding them through hands-on learning activities designed by subject experts from the University of California Irvine and the community.
Mentors can sign up for one or more academic quarters, indicating their preference for working with elementary, middle or high school students. The Fall 2023 program will begin on Saturday, October 7 for elementary students, and on Saturday, October 21 for middle and high school students.
Before each Saturday session, mentors will be expected to review the curriculum material that will be used. Mentors are expected to attend all Saturday sessions during the quarter, with some flexibility. If they aren't able to attend a session, they need to let the ALMA Academic Coordinator know in advance, at AcademicCoordinator@mpnagreen.org or by text at 714-623-7843.
