THEME-BASED FORMAT FOR GRADES K&1: Students can choose to do an in-depth study and demonstration of a particular theme. The student selects a theme, demonstrates it, and then shows what they have made and learned.
Example of Theme-based Format:
Theme: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch
Question: What causes the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
Demonstration: Build a water model showing how water currents might cause a garbage patch.
Record Observations: Draw a picture, take a photo, or present the actual model results.
Results: Present the results (data) at the fair!
INVESTIGATION FORMAT FOR GRADES 2–5 (and those in Grades K&1 who choose to): Students will complete a standard science fair investigation. This includes the student asking a testable question, stating a hypothesis, conducting trials, and analyzing data.
Example of Investigation Format:
Question: What affects how long a top spins?
Hypothesis: Initial speed, spinning surface, shape of top, top weight.
Experiments: Performance of tops differing in one property are compared.
Record observations: Duration of spinning is measured.
