The
Northern Pilgrims’Way Group (NPWG) are re-establishing the medieval pilgrimage route between St Duthac’s Collegiate Church, Tain and St Magnus Cathedral, Kirkwall.
The route is rich in local history, spectacular coastal and moorland views, plant and animal life, not to mention the Flow Country. Add to that the sense of connecting with the early saints of the area and you have the ideal combination needed for both physical and mental wellbeing. There are even benefits for those who live along the route as studies have shown that ‘slow tourism’ contributes to the local economy more than other forms.
There seems to be a growing trend for pilgrimages throughout Europe and ‘our’ route has the potential to become a popular choice for those who want a long-distance walk with a difference. The NPW has the added advantage that Braid One is very suitable for cycling. Braid Two from Dunbeath, joining Braid One at Loch More, is also a cycling possibility.
We have all the essentials for the route in place – a website, walkers guidebook, leaflets, some directional signage and information panels – but now need to promote the route and encourage its use. For this, we need time and skills that the current trustees lack. So we are considering employing a part-time Development Officer/Heritage Ranger. For this, we will need to do some serious fundraising and one step in that process is to assess public support for the project.
We would be very grateful if you would help by filling in this short survey. Thank you.
