2020-21 MCHS FIRST Robotics Application (FRC) - Steel Talons
What is FIRST Robotics?

Combining the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. We call FIRST Robotics Competition the ultimate Sport for the Mind. High-school student participants call it “the hardest fun you’ll ever have.”

Under strict rules, limited resources, and a time limit, teams of students are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program industrial-size robots to play a difficult field game against like-minded competitors. It’s as close to real-world engineering as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. Each season ends with an exciting FIRST Championship.

FIRST Robotics Competition teams get to:

Learn from professional engineers
Master STEM skills
Learn and use sophisticated software, hardware, and power tools
Build and compete with a robot of their own design
Improve teamwork, interpersonal, and communication skills
Compete and cooperate in alliances and tournaments
Understand and practice Gracious Professionalism™
Earn a place at the FIRST Championship
Qualify for millions of dollars in college scholarships

Do you have any skills that you would like to share that might be valuable? Please note that you don't need to have any prior skills to be a valuable member of the team. You will learn many of the skills throughout the year. *
FRC requires a substantial time commitment during build season and competition season. This runs from January to April. I fully understand that if I am selected for the competition team, I will try my best to attend all meetings and competition during build season. If we qualify for state, this will overlap with spring break. Meeting times may be on the weekend. In order to attend competition, members will be required to attend at least 75% of the meetings during build season. *
FIRST Robotics is an extracurricular activity. As such, I understand that my academics should always come first. In order to attend competition/event during school hours, I understand that I will maintain a passing grade for all of my classes. Failure to do so will disqualify me from attending competition/event during school hours. *
Normally we have dues of $35.  Due to the uncertainty of Covid-19 and the 2020-21 season, this year we will ask for dues of $15 to pay for the team t-shirt for new members, plus any returning members who would like a new shirt.  If you do not need a shirt, dues are $0 at this time.  This fee is non-refundable. *
All competition members will be required to participate in some form of fundraising. This may involve food events for fundraisers or asking companies to sponsor our team. *
All competition members will be required to participate in at least 1 community service or community outreach event. This includes but is not limited to helping out with outreach programs in the Mill Creek Cluster, non-FRC competition events, related mentorship programs or other volunteer opportunities discussed by the coaches.   *
I realize that no FRC problem has only one solution and that a successful team is one that cooperates by considering everyone's input. Because criticizing is not productive, I will listen with an open mind to all solutions and ideas. I agree to cooperate on whatever solution the team chooses, even if it is not my first choice. *
I agree that the goal of my team should be to do our best to solve a challenging problem.  I agree to follow the ideal of Gracious Professionalism at all times. *
I have reviewed the application with my parent/guardian and I agree to the expectations set forth by coaches and mentors. *
