Application for Fall 2024 Learning Assistants
The Learning Assistant Program is accepting applications for the Fall 2024 semester. Priority applications are due by 11:59pm on April 7, 2024.

Before applying, please review program information at csme.utah.edu/la and review eligibility requirements below. These positions are for the University of Utah main campus in Salt Lake City, Utah. The majority of Learning Assistant (LA) positions will require in-person attendance on campus to fulfill assigned duties.

This application takes approximately 10-20 minutes to complete and applicants should be aware of their schedule availability before starting. Responses can be edited after submission until April 7.
Major schedule changes should be communicated to la@csme.utah.edu, especially if an offer has already been accepted.

Applicants will need to complete four sections of the application:
  • Section 1: Applicant Information
  • Section 2: Course Preferences, Qualifications, and Mastery
  • Section 3: Experiential Experience
  • Section 4: Recommendations & Acknowledgements
Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Eligibility Requirements
  • Students need to have previously taken the course for which they are assigned or have completed an approved equivalent unless otherwise noted.
  • Students may serve as an LA for a course that they have not previously taken IF they do not intend to take that course in the future, provide evidence of subject mastery, and the instructor grants permission.
  • Students may NOT serve as an LA in a course they are taking concurrently even if different instructors are involved.
  • Students must be matriculated (degree-seeking) U of U undergraduates who are enrolled in courses (taking 3 credits or more) during the semester for which they are applying to be an LA (exception for summer semester).
  • Post-baccalaureate students who are NOT enrolled in a graduate program may be considered for LA positions that receive relatively few applicants (e.g. upper level courses), although currently matriculated/enrolled U of U undergraduates will receive priority consideration.
SCI 5050: The Science of Learning (1-credit pedagogy course)
  • All NEW Learning Assistants must enroll in SCI 5050: The Science of Learning during their first semester as an LA. The course is a 1-credit hour class that meets once weekly and provides insight into learning strategies and much more. The cost of enrollment is covered by the Learning Assistant Program. LAs are compensated for the weekly time spent in-class but not for time spent out-of-class. A registration link will be provided to new LAs during the hiring process after a student has accepted a position.
  • Class times will vary by semester and are subject to change. Applicants will be able to choose the section that works best for them later in the application.
Learning Assistant Orientation
  • All Learning Assistants will be enrolled in a Canvas Orientation course. There are some required training modules to complete in order to finalize your hiring as an LA.
Application Review Process
  • Applicants will be considered based on their application materials (eligibility) and schedule availability. Applicants who have previously served as LAs are given priority for placement, but they are NOT guaranteed positions.
  • Most LA offers will be extended between April 15 - May 1, 2024. Some offers may be sent throughout the summer up to the beginning of the fall semester. If you have questions about the status of your application, please contact la@csme.utah.edu. Please be aware that the LA program receives more applicants than there are positions available.
  • The placement process takes time. We appreciate your patience! Cancellations are always possible and we'll do our best to continue informing all applicants of open positions. Once all hiring has been finalized for the semester, we'll notify anyone that was unable to be placed. We encourage everyone to apply again in the future!
  • Keep an eye on your email inboxes for updates and offers! We do our best to provide 48 hours for you to respond but if we do not hear back we may rescind an offer and provide it to another candidate.
Job Information & Compensation
  • Learning Assistants earn $15.00 per hour as a stipend of equal payments throughout the semester.
  • This position is considered a semester-by-semester position with the option to apply for subsequent semesters. Returning LAs are given priority placement but are not guaranteed positions.
  • If an applicant has one or more active positions within the University of Utah, employment as an LA may require leaving/reducing hours at another position if the applicant's total FTE is too high. Generally, University of Utah students should only work up to 20 hours per week.
