Public Survey on Caldwell Woods Preserves
Thank you for filling out the Public Survey on Caldwell Woods Preserves. Your feedback will help us make further improvements to this site. In 2015 we began envisioning site improvements for Caldwell Woods as part of the Forest Preserves Vision Plan. The Vision plan includes 12 distinguished sites to welcome and orient visitors to the Forest Preserves.
The Caldwell Preserves is comprised of three adjacent Forest Preserve sites that include Caldwell Woods, Bunker Hill, and Sydney Yates Flatwoods. It is one of the few Forest Preserves located within the City of Chicago, with a small portion of Bunker Hill in the Village of Niles. The 340-acre preserve is an urban oasis with several large and distinct picnic groves, indoor warming shelter, Whealan Pool, unique natural areas, indoor bathrooms and easy parking. The North Branch of the Chicago River runs through the preserve and adds to the overall diversity of nature. Caldwell Preserves provides easy access for those seeking exercise, natural play areas for kids and rich plant and animal communities.
The primary goal of this gateway site is to make the Preserve more welcoming to all visitors. Below are the main suggested strategies to guide implementation efforts by FPCC staff and partners over the next 10 years on capital improvements, natural resource enhancements, programming and partnerships.
KEY STRATEGY #1 Invest in visitor amenities
• Install new information and wayfinding signs
• Create a year-round Visitor Center
• Explore feasibility of fundraising for capital improvements
KEY STRATEGY #2 Promote restoration efforts
• Identify and complete visitor-focused landscape restoration projects
• Continue managing trails
• Support expanded volunteer work
• Identify communication opportunities for volunteers to share work with trail users and picnickers
KEY STRATEGY #3 Cultivating local relationships
• Recruit more Trail Watch Volunteers and Nature Ambassadors
• Encourage partners to host events
• Activate new relationships and partnerships
We welcome feedback on these strategies and suggestions on how to make the site more welcoming. Thank you for your time and contribution.
