Perspectives and Practices in Serving Multilingual Populations

Dear Colleague:

As you are well aware, the role of the Speech-Language pathologist (SLP) is becoming increasingly complicated, as SLPs are being asked to work with caseloads that are more culturally and linguistically diverse than ever before.  This survey hopes to capture some of your opinions and experiences in serving multilingual clients.

What is this survey about?  What are the investigators trying to learn?

This study is being conducted to understand the factors that influence how SLPs treat and assess clients who are bilingual.  The study will also examine opinions on preparation and training, supports and barriers to service delivery, and feelings of confidence in serving bilingual populations.  Even if you do not currently have bilingual clients on your caseload, your input is valuable.

How long will it take to complete?

The survey will take no more than 15 minutes to complete and consists of multiple choice and open-ended questions.

Why is this study important or useful?

The results of this study may help graduate programs and other facilities understand ways to better equip SLPs with resources to provide evidence-based practice to bilingual clients.

Why have I been asked to be in this study?

We are sending you this study because you are an SLP, a clinical fellow, or a graduate student in communication disorders.  We would like your opinion regarding how to better support service delivery for bilingual clients and how to improve preparation and training for SLPs regarding bilingual assessment and treatment.

How will my privacy be protected?

This survey will ask questions about your practice and perspectives as an SLP.  You may complete the survey at a time and place of your choosing.  No identifying information will be collected and your responses will be anonymous.

How will my confidentiality be protected?

Once your responses are recorded, no identifying information will be retained in our database. All survey data will be kept in an encrypted file on a HIPAA compliant university account.  Only the investigators will have access to this account.  All data will be reported in aggregate form and no individual will be identifiable by their responses.  Your individual answers will not be shared or reported.

What will happen to my responses?  Your files will be stored in an encrypted excel file in a HIPAA compliant university drive indefinitely.

What are my rights as a participant in this study?

Taking part in this study is voluntary.  You may discontinue the survey at any time.  Your decision to participate or not participate in this study will have no effect on your relations with the American Speech Language Hearing Association.

Is there another way to complete this survey?

No, there are no alternative procedures.
