~ Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Elective ~

Other benefits of being enrolled in the AVID course may include: college field trips, Six Flag AVID night, AVID College Fair, AVID luncheon, etc.  (Requesting AVID does not guarantee enrollment, other student criteria will be examined.)

~ Project Lead The Way Elective ~
SVMS offers two Project Lead The Way (PLTW) pathways:

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Engineering
Introduction to Engineering Design:  Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects. They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software, and use an engineering notebook to document their work.

Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Biomedical Sciences
Principles of Biomedical Sciences:  In the introductory course of the PLTW Biomedical Science program, students explore concepts of biology and medicine to determine factors that led to the death of a fictional person. While investigating the case, students examine autopsy reports, investigate medical history, and explore medical treatments that might have prolonged the person’s life. The activities and projects introduce students to human physiology, basic biology, medicine, and research processes while allowing them to design their own experiments to solve problems.

Please keep in mind that the higher level PLTW courses have prerequisites and it may be challenging to switch pathways in the future. Also, switching pathways may mean starting at the beginning of the alternate pathway. Graduation requirements take priority over PLTW electives.
~ Advanced Placement Courses ~
Advance Placement (AP) courses can help you get ahead in college and broaden your college and career choices.  AP classes are year long college level courses taught at a high school.  College credit may be granted if students pass the AP subject exam at the end of the school year. With AP, you can dig deeper into the subjects you love, learn how things really work, explore new ideas, and set bigger goals for yourself.  

Tip: Students can earn the AP+ PLTW Recognition by taking multiple AP and PLTW courses!

REMINDER: Responding with "YES" below is expressing a very high interest in the course but does not actually enroll you into the class for next year.  All prospective students are required to attend AP Info Night in May to learn more about each course before they submit an AP student contract to request enrollment.

Learn about the fundamental concepts of chemistry such as structure and states of matter, inter molecular forces, reactions, and how to use chemical calculations to solve problems. Recommended prerequisites:  Earned a B or higher in AP Biology or Chemistry, and science teacher recommendation.

Interpret classic and contemporary political writings and apply pertinent Supreme Court rulings to enduring social and political issues in this country. Recommended prerequisites: Earned a C or better in the previous semester of English and US History, and a teacher recommendation.

AP Psychology Course Description: This course introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of human behavior and mental processes. While considering the psychologists and studies that have shaped the field, students explore and apply psychological theories, key concepts, and phenomena associated with such topics as the biological bases of behavior, sensation and perception, learning and cognition, motivation, developmental psychology, testing and individual differences, treatment of abnormal behavior, and social psychology.

AP Art History Course Description: Explore major forms of artistic expression including architecture, sculpture, painting and other media from across a variety of cultures. Learn about the purpose and function of art as you develop your ability to articulate visual and art historical concepts in verbal and written form.

This course emphasizes communication by applying the interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes of communication in real-life situations. Prerequisites: Complete Spanish 2 OR Spanish Speakers 1 with a B or better, and/or a teacher recommendation.
~ Math Course Placement ~
The A-G requirement for math is 3 years minimum: Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II.  As a magnet STEAM school,  every effort is made for students to be enrolled in four years of math as recommended by the district, colleges, and universities.
By the end of this school year, I have successfully passed the following math courses: *
The FINAL grade for each course must be a "C" or better for college A-G admission requirements, or a "D" or better for the minimum requirement for high school graduation.
