P.E. Grading System/Policies
Grading System/Policies for Physical Education, PE Elective and Swimming Classes

Each time a class meets 10 points are available to be earned. Points are earned in the following manner:

PREPARATION (Physical Education/PE Elective Classes) = +2 points

Students are required to wear a t-shirt (with sleeves) or sweatshirt, athletic shorts (of appropriate length) or sweatpants, socks and sneakers that secure to the foot (no slip-ons (i.e. Vans), boat shoes, Crocs, etc.). No jewelry, zippers, extra pockets, belts, buttons or loose items shall be part of the attire worn to PE or Fitness class. These create potentially unsafe situations for students and a higher risk of injury.

If students are unprepared for class, they will be marked as such and will not be able to participate in class for that day; thus forfeiting their points for that class period. PE teachers do have clothing and sneakers available to loan for the class period and, if accepted, students are able to earn their participation points for the class.  This option will only be allowed twice per student, per marking period.

If a student is unprepared for more than two classes during a marking period, the student will be issued a detention and forfeit the opportunity to make up the points missed starting with the third day they are unprepared.

PREPARATION (Swimming Class) = +2 points

Students are required to bring a bathing suit, towel, and plastic bag to school on the days that they have swimming class.  Girls need to wear a modest, one-piece dark-colored tank style bathing suit (plain or print). Boys need to wear swim trunks (boxer style with a draw string).  All students may also wear other clothing designed for use in the water (i.e. swim shirts, rash guards, or shorts) and may bring goggles, earplugs, flip-flops, and/or bathing caps if they desire.

If students are unprepared for swimming class, they will be marked unprepared and will be required to make the class up.

If a student is unprepared for more than two classes during a marking period, the student will be issued a detention and forfeit the opportunity to make up the points missed starting with the third day they are unprepared.

PARTICIPATION (all classes) = +1-8 points

+8 points = Full Participation – Student is actively involved in class for the entire period and is performing to the best of his/her ability.

+1-7 points = Partial participation – student does not give appropriate effort for a portion of the class period. A warning will be given to increase effort before points are lost.

0 points = No Participation – A student is unprepared for class OR after a warning, student continues to not participate for the remainder of class period. Student will be removed from activity for the remainder of the period.

DISCIPLINE (all classes) = 1-8 point deduction to daily points

Student behavior is disruptive, inappropriate, rude, or unsafe in any manner. If student is completely removed from activity for disciplinary reasons, all points for that day points will be forfeited.

CLOTHING VIOLATIONS/GUM

Any student who chews gum or is inappropriately dressed upon entering class, will have points deducted in the following manner (assuming the situation is rectified):

1st offense of marking period: -2 points

After 2nd offense of marking period: -4 points each occurrence

Inappropriate dress shall be defined as, but not limited to: Jewelry being worn (except if medically necessary), shirts without sleeves, shorts that do not extend below the finger tips when arms placed at sides, boxer shorts/undergarments visible, sneakers untied or not secured to foot, and any clothing displaying any references to drugs/alcohol or with inappropriate double meanings.

ATTENDANCE

Students who are absent from school cannot be actively involved in class and thus cannot earn their preparation or participation points for the day. All absences will be allowed to be made up.  This includes non-sponsored school travel (School Board Policy 204), which requires students to make up missed work due to classes missed while traveling.

Exceptions: If a student misses class because of a school-related function (field trip, full band rehearsal, sports team dismissal, etc.) or other acceptable reason (funeral, religious holiday, etc.) the absence will be excused and there will be no requirement for a make-up.

MEDICAL (with Dr. note) = Excused from class

If a student has a medical reason for missing class and is excused from class by a doctor (with documentation), he/she will be excused from class with no make-up requirement.  Note: Dr. notes will be followed exactly as written (i.e. if note says “No participation until further notice”, then student will be withheld from class until released by Dr.)

MEDICAL (note from home) = Full credit for class (as long as student is prepared for class)

A note from home can excuse students from portions of the class; however, to get credit for the class, the student must wear proper PE attire (see above) and participate to the best of their ability for that day. This may mean keeping score, setting up fields, record keeping, etc. If the student does the best that they can for that day, full credit will be given for the class. We believe that if a student is healthy enough to be in school, they can participate in class at some level. If the student is not prepared for class, they cannot earn their points for the day.

SECTIONAL = Excused - one allowable per marking period

Students may attend one music/choral sectional per marking period. Any subsequent requests will be counted as an absence from class.

VALUABLES

No valuables (jewelry, money, etc.) should be left loose in the P.E. locker rooms during class. Lockers with built-in locks are assigned to each individual student and should be used during class. For swim class students should store all valuables in the pool office for protection during class and must be removed at the conclusion of class.
NO CELL PHONES ARE PERMITTED IN LOCKER ROOMS AT ANY TIME!!!!

The P.E. staff is not responsible for stolen valuables that were not locked in the P.E. lockers.

MAKE-UPS

All absences may be made up, and a maximum of 2 days of being unprepared may be made up. If a student is unprepared 3 (or more) times in a marking period, those potential points will be forfeited and cannot be made up. After school make-up sessions will be offered each marking period. Dates and sign-up sheets will be available at least 2 weeks prior to each session.  Make-ups will also be offered during team time on selected days based on teacher availability.

GRADES

At the end of each marking period a percentage grade will be issued by dividing the number of points earned by the possible points available. Grades will be entered at the end of each 6 day rotation and will be available to parents via Skyward online access.
