2. READING:
You are going to read an article about crime. Six sentences have been removed from the article. Choose from the sentences below the one which best fits each gap. There is one extra sentence you do not need to use.

BUT I'M NOT A CRIMINAL!

Most people would be very angry if you said that they were probably a criminal. That's because most people believe that they never do anything that is illegal or commit any crimes. (1)_______. They just don't know that they are doing anything wrong. Unfortunately, even if you have no knowledge that something is illegal, it doesn't mean you won't end up in court.

71-year-old Valerie George of Brynmawr, South Wales, knew that it was illegal to drop litter in the street. (2) ____ . Mrs George thought you had to deliberately dump litter on the street, such as dropping an empty crisp packet or a can of lemonade. So she was very surprised when she was given a £75 fine because a strand of cotton fell from one of the gloves she was wearing. Poor Mrs George hadn't even noticed what had happened.

In another case in Britain, a woman was threatened with a £75,000 fine for something she had no idea was against the law. Nicola Bayston had lost her three pet dogs and decided she would print some posters to put up in her neighbourhood. (3)______. But the only news she got was that she was in serious trouble and would have to go to court.

Over in the US people have got into trouble without realising it, too. Not many people know that it's illegal to sing Happy Birthday to You as a public performance, even if you don't get paid for it. (4)_____ . But they soon found out, when lawyers from Time Warner, who own the rights to the song, asked them to pay royalties for using it. All those years the Girl Scouts had been singing the song round the campfire, they'd been breaking the law. Who knew?

In a number of states in the US it is illegal to possess a permanent marker pen in a public place. (5)________ . The reason for this very strange law is to help prevent graffiti. But, bizarrely, it means that entirely innocent office workers and artists could find that they are under arrest for carrying the things they use for work in their briefcase or bag.

Is there anything ordinary innocent members of the public can do to avoid falling into one of these strange legal traps? (6) _______ . Not everyone can know every single law there is. But most of us know what it means to be a law-abiding citizen. Fingers crossed!
