On August 31, 2021, the International Day for People of African Descent will be celebrated for the first time, by resolution of the United Nations. Here is a summary of the activities that you can follow live:

---> Opening ceremony of the International Day for People of African Descent - August 31

Special messages from the Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica, the UN Under-Secretary General and Chair of the UN Development Group, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UNFPA Executive Director.
The opening ceremony, at the National Theater of San José, will include an artistic and cultural agenda with national and international artists such as Afro Fiesta, Abel Mafuleni, the Limón Concert Band in Costa Rica, Emanuel Ntaka, Grupo Kawe, Hope Masike, Playing for Change and Rocky Dawuni.

SEPTEMBER 1 - 3, 2021 | SAN JOSE COSTA RICA

---> Opening forum: Accelerate the implementation of international commitments to promote the rights of Afro-descendants for their recognition, justice and development
September 1-3

Several forums will be organized to reaffirm the commitments assumed for the recognition, justice and development of Afro-descendants. These forums will articulate the voices of Afro-descendants and other key actors in the region and the world on issues such as the rights of Afro-descendants, the fight against racism and racial discrimination against women and youth.

Given the implications of the COVID-19 pandemic, the events will have a mixed format (face-to-face and virtual) with streaming.

---> Official closing ceremony
At the closing ceremony, stakeholders will announce renewed commitments to fulfill the rights of people of African descent in Latin America and the Caribbean. Speakers will include the President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Carlos Alvarado Quesada, the Vice President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Epsy Campbell, and UNFPA Executive Director Dr. Natalia Kanem.

SEPTEMBER 4, 2021 | SAN JOSE COSTA RICA

---> DRUM DIALOGUE
Special cultural event for the recognition, justice and development of Afro-descendants Drums Dialogue to mobilize action against prejudice, racism and injustice. It will feature a confluence of traditional drummers and other works of art from Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean and the diaspora with the intention of celebrating the diversity of the African diasporas. The opening ceremony will take place where the expedition of the lost Danish ships was wrecked. These galleons transported enslaved people from Africa and America in 1710.

National and international artists participating in Drum Dialogue include Afro Fiesta (Congo), Abel Mafuleni and Hope Masike (Zimbabwe), School of Rhythm (Panama), Kawe band (Costa Rica), Playing for Change and Rocky Dawuni (Ghana). ).
